How do I get my language supported?

Text Languages:

We add new languages periodically. In the process of adding a new language to the automatic translation system, the most important learning material is existing high-quality translations—the same text in two languages.

A significant amount, typically 4 to 5 million words of this type of text, is needed to build a reasonable-quality automatic translation system for a particular language pair. Find out how automatic translation works at www.aka.ms/MT.

Speech Languages

Speech recognition is a totally different process than translation. It requires a whole new set of data (hundred of hours of recorded audios and their associated transcriptions) and trainings of our machine learning based engines to become available. Therefore, we cannot always deliver speech recognition as quickly as new supported languages become available for Microsoft Translator.

We continue to release improvements to the quality of our existing languages and to expand on our coverage of languages from around the world so that more and more people can talk to the Microsoft Translator in their own language.

Stay tuned on our blog (www.aka.ms/Translatorblog), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/microsofttranslator), or Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/MStranslator) for updates to our language coverage.

For the up-to-date list of supported language please go to www.microsoft.com/translator/languages.aspx

  1. Karenni

There are more and more Karenni speaking students and parents settling into our schools and communities. We need written English script to be translated into spoken Karenni for in classroom purposes and for parents to further support their children with homework.

  4. cantonese (traditional)

Add voice recognition for cantonese (traditional ) in conversation between two or many parties . It will be a great help to those hearing impaired . Ay chance this app can run during phone calls too to transcribe voice into text?

  8. Faroese

The people of the Faroe Islands were disappointed when Google told them they had no plans to add their language to Google Translate. The response was a lovely community effort of recording single words and sentences by many people on the islands on their phones. Project was called Faroe Translate.

A communal effort in providing aligned bilingual data might work. Of course, not only Faroese to English but Faroese to Danish. (So maybe trilingual data input?)

Would it be possible to permit anybody to create a 'User Defined' language and to input data from scratch and continually build on it.…

  19. Kalaallisut

    Inuugujoq, Kalaallisut oqaatsit aamma atulersigit.

We wish Microsoft Translator to add Kalaallisut language working with Oqaasileriffik - The Language Secretariat of Greenland to your language family.

Like you worked with Māori also throughout other parts of Microsoft!
Good luck! It is a huge wish for our indiginous language in order to be preserved and develop like other languages. I’d like to add this to all categories.

Thank you for reading my contribution.

    Keep up the good work!

    //Michael
